Dr Willemse, a lecturer in the Early Childhood Education Unit, has successfully completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer-integrated Education from the University of Pretoria.

Dr Willemse’s thesis delved into the support mechanisms required for teachers to seamlessly integrate coding and robotics with mathematical concepts. Within her work, she introduced the Needs, External Factors, Learning Process and Outcomes (NELO) framework. The framework meticulously explores the prerequisites and external factors essential for the successful implementation of this integration. Furthermore, the framework elucidates the unfolding of the learning process and the potential positive outcomes that can be anticipated.

In her research, Dr. Willemse employed participatory action research that encompassed semi-structured interviews, guided observations, collaborative discussion groups, photo voice, a systematizing expert interview, and a researcher journal.
