SANTS Private Higher Education Institution is delighted to share the exciting news of Dr. Kayla Willemse’s recent achievement. Dr Willemse, a lecturer in the Early Childhood Education Unit, has successfully completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer-integrated Education from the University of Pretoria.

Dr Willemse’s thesis delved into the support mechanisms required for teachers to seamlessly integrate coding and robotics with mathematical concepts. Within her work, she introduced the Needs, External Factors, Learning Process and Outcomes (NELO) framework. The framework meticulously explores the prerequisites and external factors essential for the successful implementation of this integration. Furthermore, the framework elucidates the unfolding of the learning process and the potential positive outcomes that can be anticipated.

In her research, Dr. Willemse employed participatory action research that encompassed semi-structured interviews, guided observations, collaborative discussion groups, photo voice, a systematizing expert interview, and a researcher journal. The results revealed that the integration of coding and robotics with mathematical concepts offers an engaging and enjoyable approach to teaching, providing both teachers and learners with valuable exposure to a technology-driven world.

Dr. Willemse’s research sheds invaluable light on this subject, and its implications are poised to have a substantial impact on the field of education. The findings offer valuable insights for teachers and policymakers, providing them with essential knowledge to enhance educational practices.

SANTS extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Willemse for this remarkable achievement and eagerly anticipates her ongoing contributions to the education sector. Her unwavering commitment, diligent efforts, and passion for education have undeniably made a substantial mark in the field.
