Preparing for a teaching interview can feel like both a daunting and an exciting opportunity, especially if you are stepping into the professional world for the first time. It’s more than just reaching out to a school for placement for your Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – it’s about your readiness to be an educator and make a real impact in the classroom. In this blog, we will explore essential tips and strategies to help you stand out in your interview and confidently take the next step in your teaching career.

Before The Interview

Research the school by viewing its social media platforms and website. This will help you understand the school’s vision, mission, and culture. Most interviews will have some common questions, such as: “Tell me about yourself, and why are you interested in the teaching position?”. Practice your answer ahead of time, focusing on who you are and what value you can bring to the school.

Plan your outfit ahead of time. Remember, you are applying for a teaching position and must look respectable and professional. Ms Cronje, a Foundation Phase Head of the Department at a Primary School advises that one must avoid jeans and t-shirts. She also recommends that skirts be knee-length or below-the-knee.

Interview Day

Even though the principal and the School Governing Body (SGB) will have a copy of your CV, it is advisable to bring hard copies. Print about three additional copies and place them in a flip file or folder. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled interview time. If you are taking public transportation, have a backup plan in case of delays. First impressions count! Make sure you are neat and presentable. Remember to smile and treat everyone from the security guard to the receptionist with respect.

Ms Cronje advises students to refer to their Work Integrated Learning experience during their interview. Focus on administrative duties you have assisted with, even if it was just completing the attendance register. She also emphasizes the importance of self-confidence making eye contact with all panellists involved in the interview.

Questions that can be asked on the day of the interview

Mr Moloka, a former principal at a primary school, noted the following questions that you might encounter during an interview.

  • Describe your teaching style.
  • Describe a successful lesson or activity you have implemented during your WIL experience.
  • Explain how you would manage a difficult parent?
  • How would you communicate and collaborate with parents/guardians to support children’s learning?
  • How would you handle discipline in your class?
  • How do you manage behaviour and encourage positive discipline in the classroom.
  • How would you deal with a difficult learner in your class?
  • What professional development opportunities have you pursued recently?
  • How will you use assessment to inform your teaching?

The South African Teacher Union (SAOU) also provides a list of potential questions:

  • What are the five components covered in the Maths Curriculum?
  • How will you support a student who is struggling with mathematics/languages?
  • Have you coached any sports?
  • What value will you add to our school and where would you like to be involved?
  • If you and a colleague disagree about a situation, how will you handle it?
  • How would you implement the SIAS policy in your class?

Preparing for an interview is about presenting your best self, from your knowledge and passion to your professionalism and appearance. By planning your outfit, practicing your responses, and walking in with confidence, you’ll be ready to make a lasting impression and take the next big step in your teaching career. Good luck!
