Afrikaans: A century of Colourful Sayings and Language Wealth
Afrikaans, ons eie trotse moedertaal, vier vanjaar sy 100ste bestaansjaar as ’n amptelike taal van Suid-Afrika. Wat ’n merkwaardige mylpaal! Hierdie geleentheid gee ons die kans om nie net die geskiedenis van Afrikaans te vier nie, maar ook om die besondere eienskappe van die taal te waardeer – veral die unieke, en soms snaakse, sê-goed wat dit so lewendig en eg maak.
Afrikaans, our very own and proudly spoken mother tongue, is celebrating its 100th birthday as an official language of South Africa. What a remarkable milestone! This opportunity gives us the chance to celebrate the history of Afrikaans and appreciate the particular characteristics of this language with its unique, sometimes funny, sayings that makes the language more authentic.
Afrikaans is bekend vir sy diverse, beeldryke en dikwels humoristiese uitdrukkings. Wat baie mense wel nie weet nie, is dat Afrikaans een van die jongste tale ter wêreld is wat as ’n volwaardige skryftaal ontwikkel het en akademiese funksionaliteit insluit. Die taal het ontstaan uit 17de-eeuse Nederlands, maar is deur die jare verryk met woorde uit Khoi, Maleis, Portugees, Frans, Duits, en selfs Engels. Vandag is dit ’n taal wat deur miljoene mense regoor die wêreld gepraat word. Alhoewel Afrikaans een van die jongste tale gesien word, is dit steeds vanaf 2022, die derde grootste aantal sprekers taal in Suid-Afrika.
Afrikaans is famous for its diverse, picturesque and sometimes humorous expressions. But what many people don’tt know, is that Afrikaans is one of the youngest languages in the world that has developed as a full-fledged written-language, including an academic functionality. The language arose from 17th-century Dutch, but was enriched, through the years, with words from Khoi, Malay, Portuguese, French, German, and even English languages. Today, it is a language spoken by millions of people all over the world. Even though Afrikaans is seen as one of the youngest languages, it is still the third biggest language spoken in South Africa since 2022.
Afrikaans is nie net ’n taal nie – dit is ’n gees. Dis daardie tannie in die kerkbasaar wat jou vra of jy al geëet het terwyl sy jou bord vol laai, en daardie kind wat sê: “Ek is nie dom nie, ek dink net stadig.” Of jy nou so skerp is dat jy jouself kan sny, so droog is dat ʼn kaktus skoon dors word, of meer stories as ʼn tannie in die kerkkoor het, is Afrikaans steeds vir jou! Dis ’n taal wat lag as jy wil huil, ’n taal wat sing as jy wil stil bly, en ’n taal wat altyd vir jou sê: “Hou moed, ou pêl.”
Afrikaans isn’t just a language – it is a spirit. It is the aunty at the church bazaar that asks you if you have already eaten, while loading your plate with food, and the little kid who says, “I’m not dumb, I just think slow”. Even if you are ‘so sharp you can cut yourself’, so ‘dry even a cactus becomes thirsty’, or ‘have more stories than the aunty in the church choir’, Afrikaans is still for you! It is a language that laughs when you want to cry, a language that sings when you want to keep quiet, and a language that will always tell you to “Take courage, old friend.”
Baie geluk, Afrikaans! Jy is dalk nou 100 jaar oud, maar jy is steeds so lewendig soos ’n klomp kinders in ’n klas sonder onderwyser. Mag jy nog lank voortleef en mense laat sê: “Dis nou regtig iets om oor huis toe te skryf!”.
Congratulations Afrikaans! You might be a 100 years old, but you are still as lively as a bunch of kids in a class, unattended by a teacher. May you live on and still make people say “Now that is really something to write about!”
