Teachers across grades in South African schools are faced with learners who cannot read. Therefore, it is your duty as a teacher to establish a classroom culture that encourages reading. Reading is important for many different activities and in many areas of our lives. If you can read fluently, and with understanding, you can have a better chance in life to succeed in your job and possible studies. Remember reading is a skill that every learner needs to master as it impacts all aspects of their lives.
As a teacher you need to:
MAKE READING FUN BY:
-Creating a reading corner that changes regularly and has exciting varied reading materials.
-Setting reading competitions.
-Allowing learners to choose their own reading books from the library or from your classroom library.
-Model reading to your learners.
By creating a culture of reading you are empowering, exposing and challenging the learners to know better. Remember learners who are always engaged in reading are likely to enjoy Language and Literacy and they progress quickly and become independent learners.
NOTE: It is important to praise the learners as it helps to build their confidence. Also, ensure parents support reading as a lifelong learning habit.
