It is examination time again and the word assessment is once more prominent in our vocabulary!
A short definition of educational assessment is “… the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve subsequent learning (Dreyer, 2010, p. 5).
Considering all the concepts included in the above definition, we at SANTS understand that this is a stressful time for many students as there are unpredictable factors that can influence your performance. However, examination time can also be a positive experience. If you regard this as an opportunity to demonstrate to yourselves and us your gained knowledge and what you can do, we shall recognise the hours you have put in studying during the semester.

SANTS Private Higher Education Institution offers the teaching qualifications through a distance mode with online support and assessment. Students are invited to attend non-compulsory support sessions at venues as close to them as possible.

57 Support venues have been established nationally to offer non-compulsory support sessions that are facilitated by academic tutors with the support of academic staff. Tutor intervention during these face-to-face support sessions focuses on facilitating the students’ integration of the theoretical and practical components of the learning programme with the emphasis on best classroom practice in preparation for their Workplace Integrated Learning (WIL).

With an academic tutor, students have the opportunity to:
• Observe the Tutor who will demonstrate lessons.
• Work in Communities of Practice and prepare lessons.
• Roleplay the presentation of lessons your selves.
• Learn to make and use Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSM).
• Understand the information in the WIL Guidelines and Requirements (GR).
• Have fun sharing ideas with student teachers.

SANTS is excited to announce that 714 students have completed the Diploma in Grade R Teaching qualification recently.

The academic fraternity has been going through a roller-coaster since the world has been hit by the covid-19 Pandemic. This has affected most students in ways more than one, however, the hardworking academic staff together with the dedicated students have proven yet again that they can thrive against all odds.

Ntombikayise Qolohe from Bizana, in the Eastern Cape, said: “I enjoyed doing the Diploma in Grade R Teaching with SANTS. I have already bagged myself a job in January 2022. I am definitely going to register for a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching. I am excited, and can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

The Department of Education stipulates clearly stipulates that the minimum requirement for a Grade R teacher at a school in South Africa is either a Diploma in Grade R Teaching (NQF 6) or a Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching (NQF 7). The articulation on the Diploma in Grade R Teaching is the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching.

Mr Nelson Mandela, once said, “We must use time wisely and forever realise that the time is always ripe to do right” (in: Kalungu-Banda, 2006). When looking back at the academic year of 2021, we as SANTS’ Management and Staff would like to congratulate all of you who have seized every day of 2021 to do right in the following ways:
• understood the enormous and important role you are playing and are destined to play as teachers in educating, our learners as we acknowledge that a concerted effort from all of us is critical in strengthening democratic South Africa to embrace all of its people;
• acted as a responsible, self-directed student as we know that there were many challenges you needed to overcome in fulfilling this role;
• familiarised yourselves with all the information SANTS provided regarding policies and regulations as we know that apart from your study materials you also had to spend time on these documents;
• communicated with SANTS professionally and respectfully as we know that students do become frustrated with certain processes.

We are celebrating the positive results of so many of our students and would like to acknowledge the support you have received from your loved ones. For those who have to re-do modules, we will continue to support you until you have completed your qualification.

We are looking forward to 2022 when we shall continue to seize all opportunities to assist you as students to fulfil your dreams in working towards completing your qualification as each one of us has a role to play to do right. The Diploma in Grade R Teaching Unit has in the past two years been a testimonial of the continuous learning process. Not only have we grown as a unit, with two highly qualified lecturers joining the Unit in 2021 but our unit has also been highly successful in the academic arena. Currently, we have three lecturers enrolled in Masters’ programs and four of our lecturers’ academic achievements are noteworthy. SANTS, QUALITY ASSESSMENT AND DISTANCE EDUCATION

SANTS Private Higher Education Institution hosted a two-day seminar titled: SANTS, Quality Assessment and Distance Education: The golden threads that intertwine. The purpose of the seminar was to explore the facets of assessments in Distance Education. Keynote speakers were Dr Ruth Aluko from the University of Pretoria (UP) and the chairperson of NADEOSA; and Prof Surette van Staden from UP, Director of the Centre of Evaluations and Assessment. They have broadened our understanding of the importance of assessment in Distance Education and the implementation of the recommendations provided in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) as an international assessment project. Three teachers: Dr Nastassja Maree, Portia Maseko and Tanita Reddy provided further insight into assessments in classroom contexts. The dialogue of using assessments is vital for learning in distance education for enhancing the progress of all SANTS’ students.

SANTS Private Higher Education Institution would like to congratulate Dr Venise Joubert, a lecturer in the Intermediate Phase Teaching division, on being awarded her Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) recently at the University of Pretoria. The title of her thesis is Lecturers’ Understanding of Postcolonial Policy Change in Curriculum.

Dr Joubert believes that the key to success is perseverance.

"If I have learned anything, it is the value of perseverance. The PhD journey is more often than not filled with hard work and frustration. The key, however, lies in celebrating small victories, using setbacks as stepping stones, improving little by little, and most importantly, persevering."

Her thesis focuses on power, resistance, meaning, and identity within the concepts of decolonisation and Africanisation. "Focussing on postcolonial curriculum change and critically analysing lecturers' understandings of decolonisation and Africanisation against the backdrop, I gained a better understanding of Higher Education and the challenges associated with changing policy and practice."

Joubert explored and critically analysed lecturers' understanding of the concepts of decolonisation and Africanisation. She interviewed 35 lecturers employed at the University of Pretoria.

"After analysing the data, I found that identity played an important role in lecturers' understandings. Class intersected with race to determine lecturers' identities, but these were often overdetermined by their identities as academics and intellectuals."

According to Joubert, this brought her to the conclusion that teaching is a profession, not an occupation. "Teaching is a profession, not an occupation, and as such, it requires a deep understanding of what it means to be a professional teacher."

She said this involves more than being an expert in a specific field or being familiar with your subject content. "It requires a critical understanding of the context within which you work and the policies that guide your practice."
