For me, the answer to this question is multifaceted, deeply personal, and profoundly meaningful. I am a teacher because I believe in the transformative power of educationโ€”As it has the power to shape minds, the power to inspire hearts, and the power to change lives.

I am here to share this important message on your special day. Having achieved this milestone, I am confident that SANTS Private Higher Education Institution due to its high quality of education, has successfully equipped you with the required and relevant skills to go out there and fly its flag high.

Being a teacher is all about believing in the potential of every individual learner. Teaching is not merely a profession but a callingโ€”a calling to nurture, guide, and empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, changemakers, and global citizens.

As a teacher, you will need to be cautious of the following, which are some of the traits you should portray to your learners and society at large:

  • As a teacher, you should be able to witness the spark of curiosity and the thirst for knowledge in the eyes of the learners. Teachers have the power of knowledge to break down barriers and build bridges because education serves as a universal language that unites the nation.
  • It is through education that we as teachers can foster understanding, empathy, and respect for diversity while creating a more inclusive and compassionate society where every voice is heard and valued.
  • As we all know, South Africa is blessed to be multicultural and multilingual; it is, therefore, the teacherโ€™s responsibility to foster a culture of inclusivity, equity, and diversity in the classroom and school community.
  • As teachers, we should recognize that we have the power and the ability to transform and uplift individual learners, empower communities, and inspire hope for the future. The teacherโ€™s primary goal is to inspire and empower every learner to reach their full potential.

  • This reminds me of our former president, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, who once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” Having said that, I am saying to you all, together, let us harness the power of education to create a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
  • It is important to note that everyone has unique talents and strengths waiting to be discovered. Therefore, the teacherโ€™s mission should be to create a learning environment that fosters curiosity, creativity, and self-confidence. Remember, we are preparing our learners to become global citizens and be able to fit in wherever they go. The skills that we as teachers equip the learners with should be those that will sustain them beyond the classroom.
  • Ultimately, as a teacher, you should strive to make a positive difference in the lives of your learners and to leave a lasting legacy that extends far beyond the walls of the classroom. This you can do by being a source of inspiration, support, and encouragement, helping them to discover their passions and potentials while they pursue their dreams.
  • It is my strong belief that you, as teachers, consider yourselves to be lifelong learners by continuously seeking out opportunities for professional growth and development. Therefore, I urge you to continue refining your teaching practices while inspiring learners and people around you to become lifelong learners, too.
  • As a teacher you should have a profound sense of purpose and fulfilment because teaching is not merely a profession; it is a calling or a vocation, where one is meant to serve and empower others through the transformative power of education. It is a calling to nurture the minds, hearts, and spirits of young learnersโ€”to ignite the flame of curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking within them. It is a calling to instil in them a love of learning that will stay with them long after they leave the classroom.

In emphasis, I would like to ingrain into your mind that a teacher creates a safe and inclusive space where every learner feels the warmth and encouragement to do even better. I hope you hold onto the good traits and always have that eagerness to embrace and impart knowledge for the success of the learners and the society at large.

In closing, I am grateful for being invited to this platform as a fellow teacher to serve and remind you of the commitment you made the first time when you responded to the call.ย  Your response was to walk the journey until you achieved this huge milestone willingly. I hope you all share the same sentiments.

Congratulations to all of you, and I wish you all a brighter future as you go out there and change the world.
